Seether with opening bands Idle Sons and Rocketface played Capital Music Hall in Ottawa on May 13th, 2006. Capital Music Hall moved since the last time I was there, but had a good idea of the new location. So we head down there, and no Capital Music Hall to be found, but we saw tour buses, so we had to be close. We asked someone, and as it turns out, it is in the back of the building and the entrance was in the middle of a public parking lot. Stupid place if you ask me, you would never know it was there.
The venue is kinda cool. It's a fairly narrow cement building with a second level balcony extending down both sides with 2 bars. They had one side of the balcony completely blocked off which was dumb, because that would have opened up a lot of good places to see the show. That is complaint #1 of the evening so far..... The show was "all ages", so they had the bars closed off to the rest of the venue, and you couldn't take your drink outside of the area...Complaint #2! Plus I was ID'd 3 times that night,... hey I am 31, nice compliment, but once is enough!!! hahaha. Complaint #3 - After a couple beers and a couple shots, we were ready for the show. Surprisingly, there were only few people at the show who were under 19....
Idle Sons were the first to play. We decided to stay at the bar and watch from there, hehe. They were actually very good. The tunes were catchy, they sounded good, and the band was a lot of fun. They had cool drum breakdowns and awesome timing. After seeing them, I will have to check out their CD. They sounded similar to Three Days Grace, or something like that..... Good live band to open the show.
Rocketface was next to hit the stage. Still staying in the bar, we decided to check them out from there. We took a couple pictures from there, so you can see, it was not a bad spot to watch from. They were more of a 70's - 80's progressive sounding band, and very hard to describe, so check them out here and you will hear what they sound like.... They're a three piece band, with the drummer as the lead singer. These guys are really talented! The guitarist started out the show with a little impressive guitar solo (first solo I heard that evening). The bass lines were not simple to play either, however, I couldn't seem to get into the music! They get my thumbs up for technically talented musicians though. After the the show, we saw them hanging out in the crowd, I complimented the guitarist for a good set, and Shanna talked to the drummer for a little bit, talking about playing drums, her drum set, and the fact that she was very impressed he played and sang at the same time.
Just before Seether came out, we made our way out of the bar area and headed as close to the stage as possible. We were about 3 people away from the stage, which was awesome, however we didn't notice at first we were right beside the speakers. ops... my fault. But Shanna and I decided to stay there since we were in a perfect spot to see the show, and it would have been hard to move anywhere else. Seether entered the stage and started the show with "Gasoline". Whoohoo. Shawn Morgan sounded awesome, the guitars sounded so cool...I love their raw sound! Shawn got the crowd going "Everyone Jump!". Since then, I feel bad for the bouncer on the left side of the stage, because for the entire show, he was helping down the crowd surfers! Our side had no crowd surfers, and our bouncer didn't need to do anything but tell a few people with cameras to turn off their flashes.... They played some older tunes like "69 Tea", and "Needles", "Pride" and "Fine Again" dedicated to Dime Bag Darrell (ex Pantera and Damageplan) and Dave Williams (Drowning Pool) which was awesome. Plus they played a few verses of "Walk" by Pantera, then going into a song from their new CD-"Because of Me". Whoohoo. But that wasn't the only cover that night... they played "Heart Shaped Box" from Nirvana, which sounded amazing. I always thought Shawn Morgan sounded like Kurt Cobain, but oh my god, if you closed your eyes, you would have a hard time telling if it is Kurt or Shawn singing. There was a crowd surfer showing off his Nirvana shirt during the song. haha. From the new CD, we heard "Truth", "Burrito", "The Gift", "Given", and they closed the show with "Remedy". There were 2 really fast breaks at the end, and it almost didn't feel like encores...more like a quick smoke break for Shawn. Shawn finished the show having a smoke...so the end of the show was kinda abrupt, and Shawn didn't really talk to the crowd which was disappointing. But the lights coming on in the venue, was a good indication it was over... It was a real fun night for us, we prefer to see our favorite bands in clubs. I first saw Seether open for Evanescence at the Corel Centre, and this show in the club was soo much better.
