Green Day and opening act Jimmy Eat World played the Corel Centre last night. We arrived at the venue 30 minutes before showtime, but were stuck outside in lines until past 7pm. I don't think the Corel Centre was ready for this sold out show. There were still lines to get in well into Jimmy Eat World's set. They should have opened the door much earlier. So after grabbin' a beer and finding our seats, we missed the first song. I am not a big fan of Jimmy Eat World, but for a new band, they sounded very good and had good stage presence. They played for 45 minutes, including all the radio singles and other songs we didn't recognize, but were pretty good. Just before Green Day hit the stage, we had a huge drunk pink bunny shake his booty to YMCA, it was really funny and got the crowd ready for Green Day.
Right on time, Green Day hit the stage, with American Idiot. They sounded very good, even with us being in the 300 section of the Corel Centre. The band was very apparent with their hate for George W Bush (seems to be a trend with many bands this past year). They said "Here's a fuck you to George W", the crowd went wild. Billie Joe was commenting
during their tours, Canada always has the best crowds, and this tour was even better. Billie Joe was in complete control of the crowd, we were doing "the wave", screaming contests from each side of the Corel Centre. Billie would spontaneously just yell "CANADA!!" or "OTTAWA!!" and the crowd would roar. Green Day was showing their appreciation to the fans,
thanking us and include people from the crowd in the show! I have never seen anything like it, first Billie grabbed a kid from the crowd gave him a water gun, and they both cooled the fans down in the humid venue. Then, Billie told the crowd, he needed a drummer, after the first wannabe got up there and thrown off, a younger kid was pulled on stage and got to play Tre Cool's drum kit and keeping the beat up, while Bille continued to find a bass and guitar player. And they did it! Three kids from the crowd were playing on stage with Billie, and they actually sounded pretty good. The kids were "having the time of their lives". The guitarist got to keep the guitar Billie gave him. I am sure these kids will never forget this night. Green Day's set included older and newer tunes including, Brain Stem, Longview, September (dedicated to New Orleans), Boulevard Of Broken Dreams and some very fun cover tunes, like a mixture of the old classic "Shout" and Queen's "We Are The Champions."
We managed to get a few pictures and short videos of the show. Check'em out.
