Our R/C Nitros

In the beginning, we ventured down to Toy's R Us, picked up some cool classic model cars, got some paint and headed home for a new journey that was never supposed to go this far..... After a half a dozen model cars, we decided to go to a local hobby shop to look for something a little more exciting.

Once I saw the Nitro gas powered cars, I had to get one.   It is a 1/10 HPI MT2SS.  It was definitely a step up from what we were used to.   It is gas powered which mean is run off of  Methyl Alcohol mixed with 20% nitro fuel.   I had to build the gears, suspension including shocks, run gas lines, electronics, servos, etc.    Very cool.   Total learning curve trying to start it.   But once it was running....  OMG....  it flies....  according to the specs to tops out at 70KM/h.

Shanna, on training, got a  Tamiya Twin Detonator Monster truck electric kit.   She put it all together including suspension, twin motors, drive train, etc.   She loves to run people over, hit basketball nets, and has nailed our car at full tilt at least twice.   She was scary to be around!   Then after some practice, she is doing backwards doughnuts, reverse 180, cruising in the living room (Spencer didn't like that very much).

Speaking of learning to drive, I wasn't used to driving an r/c car going 30 - 40 KM/h down the neighborhood streets either.   Oh, and gluing the tires to the rims is very important apparently.    We had tires come flying off at us- blown right off the rim.   Too funny.  Anyway, to see what the car could really do, we head to a huge school yard... large field.    Getting a little too excited with the speed this car was going, I hit a school portable going I don't know how fast..   Front suspension rod pops off.   No biggie.  Pop it back on ready to roll.    Then within 2 minutes I hit a metal pole with the back tire.   That broke the suspension arm, blown rear differential gears, muffler flew off (still not sure how that happened).   So, that ended that fun... back to the repair shop..

Shanna, after seeing what this car can do, was ready for the upgrade.  Being late in the season, she was excited for next spring to get a Nitro.. a 1/8 Savage X 4.6 Big block which came out last month (she was checking them out online).  After my couple of good crashes at the schoolyard,  I had to go to Orleans (40 minute drive) to get my differential gears, some ez clips, and I saw the Savage X 4.6 Big block kit.  oooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh.   I couldn't resist.   Scoop.  Got some purple and silver paint (I went with her favorites).   While I am paying for her surprise, she called me on my cell phone.   I told her about the huge selection of models etc, and that she needed to come check it out..  Then booting home, excited to give her the Savage she has been wanting.. she calls again.    Shanna got tickets to Elton John for her and her mom...  so was sooo excited.  Well when I got home, her day got even better.   After 2 days of hibernating in the workshop building, we finally got "The Beast" running. This thing is HUUUUGE- as you can see by the pictures below. And check out the cool paint job that Shanna put blood sweat and tears into. Its a pretty good tape job!

Well as much as we love our cars, our need for excitement is slowly growing. Our minds are now wandering in the direction of helicopters, plains, boats, RV's, and rockets....its going to be a long winter, but we'll see what next spring will bring!
